HookedGamers.com, Now with Edgeworks Flavor

Just a quick community update: several people have noticed some familiar tunes coming from some YouTube videos recently. It's true, several videos from HookedGamers.com have asked for and received permission to use music from The Codex and The Heretic in their title sequences. There's some good stuff there, with some good coverage of E3. Here are some examples for your viewing pleasure:

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3

Dead Rising 2

Vanquish

LittleBigPlanet 2

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

We don't tend to announce this sort of thing on our site, but we've been receiving some indications of interest from the community and we decided to spread the word. Check out the videos above, and more on HookedGamers.com!

The Catacombs

Big news for our advertisers today. We here at Edgeworks HQ have been working for a while now on a custom, in-house stats tracking system called The Catacombs, which allows us to track site and forum activity, as well as analyze it automatically. It's a great system, and very helpful when planning future projects and initiatives.

Well today we are opening a part of that system up for the public, specifically the Ads tracker. Starting today, our advertisers can log in to a special section of the site, using their already-familiar Forum user accounts, and get up-to-the-second statistics and analysis of the performance of their ads, as well as a way to create new ads and renew ads that are coming to the end of their lives. Which brings me to the next change: the ad payment system. Rather than the clunky old "$20 a month" system we were using before, which didn't take into account changing traffic patterns or the number of ads being displayed, we are now working on the standard CPM system, wherein advertisers pay for a certain number of pageviews for their ad. This system allows for much greater flexibility for the system as a whole, as well as much greater reliability for our advertisers.

This is a quantum leap forward for the advertising system of EdgeworksEnt.com, and we're confident that our advertisers will agree. So if you've been thinking about setting up an ad on EdgeworksEnt.com but you've been holding back, now's the time to do it. Go check it out!

Fixing A Broken Window

Hey, everyone, a quick update: we have received messages from several Windows users who were getting distorted images when trying to play the new Radical teaser natively in Windows 7. Turns out Windows has a hard time with 16:9 pixels, and was displaying them as 4:3. Leaving out any discussion of whether Windows can really claim the ability to run Quicktime videos natively at all, I am happy to announce that we have fixed the problem and re-uploaded new copies for those of you who need them.

Those of you who saw no distortion in the first place can go on merrily about your day.

In other news, the Radical Facebook page has been consistently and rapidly growing, and our Radical podcast has been getting quite a bit of attention as well. That is nothing, however, compared to the view and download statistics our new in-house stats tracking system has been showing for the Announcement Teaser itself. We're very excited about the activity this teaser has kicked up, and we're confident we can keep cranking up the excitement all the way to the premiere!

More on that later...

Keeping in Touch

A couple of updates for those of you who like feeds: we now have an iTunes podcast that you can subscribe to, which will automatically download new Radical episodes into your iTunes library as soon as they are released, listed in the Links sidebox. We'd love to have your comments on the podcast page, and be sure to send the link to anyone you think would like it: the more people who subscribe, the more visibility the podcast will get.

And, on the text side of things, we have a Radical RSS feed, available from the RSS link at the top-right of the Radical front page, which will include all news from the series as well as company-wide news like new series premieres, etc. This feed is also being mirrored on the Radical Facebook page, so you can keep up with us there as well.

As production ramps up for the series, we will be releasing more information and content through these feeds, so be sure to stay tuned!

Edgeworks is Back

When I woke up this morning, I noticed that there was already a thread about this being February 9th, the anniversary of Edgeworks Entertainment's founding. It's true, February 9th has come again, and this time is marks the fifth year since this community began. Five years! That's hard to believe. The release of The Codex, the announcement and release of The Heretic, the release of Vox Populi, this date has seen some big events for our community. So what have we cooked up this year, I wonder?

Well, we recently moved to a new hosting plan, which will ensure that Edgeworks can keep functioning for a long time to come. We've also got too many site updates to name, most prominently the move toward a custom MySQL database for Edgeworks content that will make updating the site much more efficient, as well as providing in-house stats tracking and customization.

Is your blood pumping yet? Are you totally stoked and jumping for joy about the back-end architecture changes to the Edgeworks site? No? Ok, well let's see if we can do one better...

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages, I have an announcement to make. Today, February 9th, 2010, Edgeworks Entertainment is unveiling a brand new, completely original, live-action webseries called Radical. And what's more, we've got a teaser for you. In fact, we've got a teaser, a desktop, three avatars, a media page, and a whole new site section and forum section for you to explore! We also have a Facebook page you can become a fan of, and an iTunes podcast will be up soon. There's enough new content to keep anyone busy for a good long while, and there's more on the way.

Over the next few weeks and months we'll be posting more news and content, as well as merchandise and sponsorship options for those who are so inclined. We're aiming to begin full production later this spring, and we will be announcing a release date for the first episode around then as well. In the meantime go watch the teaser, go check out the desktops and the production stills, but most of all, go spread the word:

Edgeworks is back.

We'll keep you posted on when the switch is complete, and in the meantime, Happy New Year!

Update: The site is back up! We're still ironing out some links and functions, and optimizing the site, but you should be able to use everything as it was!
Archive Expansion

Happy Holidays! A quick update: the VP Archive has recently been hit by a bug that stopped the page from fully loading. That bug has been fixed, and I've also taken the opportunity to update the page with some statistics. These will automatically update as more reviews are written, and as of this newspost they are quite impressive: 110 reviews, with a new review every 2.67 days.

We've got some big games and movies coming up soon, and I look forward to seeing what the community thinks of them!

100 Reviews!

Just a quick note: Vox Populi just reached its 100th review, with Trumpetman's review of the album Absolution by Muse. This is obviously an exciting landmark, and we here at Edgeworks HQ are quite happy with VP's progress!

In fact, VP has become more popular than we expected, with five different sections and a stunning average of a new review every two days. We're very happy with how the community has responded, and for those of you who haven't gotten involved yet, I encourage you to check it out!

Just a quick update: we have a new Edgeworks front page. This new page displays news from each of our productions separately, and includes a short description for newcomers. The newest post from any of our sections will be posted in its entirety, followed by three posts from each section. The section headers are also links to the different site sections, allowing non-regulars to more easily find their favorite series.

Also, please note: this design isn't final. We will be making a few adjustments and fixes in the coming days, but we thought we'd open it up as a sort of public beta while we tweak it. Please feel free to share your thoughts (and any bugs you might notice) in the comments thread.

It's All About the Music

As Vox Populi nears its 100th review, we have some exciting news: we have opened the system up to music reviews! These reviews will be based on albums, along the lines of TV seasons, and can also focus on entire careers, like the "Complete Series" reviews of the TV section. The Links sections will include the Official Site (if available), the iTunes album link, and the standard General Discussion thread on our forums. The Archive, Bios pages, News system and forums have all been set up and are ready to receive your reviews.

We have also taken this opportunity to fix a minor bug in the Archive which would show distorted product images for non-film products. This has been fixed with a fun new piece of code (my powers are growing by the day), and will now automatically resize the images to a standard proportion on both the Archive front page as well as the individual review pages.

This is a great opportunity for veteran reviewers as well as those who have been waiting to write their first review. So go forth, you music lovers, and spread the Gospel of Rock!

More updates to announce: the Edgeworks Online Store has gotten a few graphic and design tweaks. Specifically, the formatting has been made more standard between product pages, a "Related Products" section has been added to each product page, a product availability listing has been added beneath the title of each item, the "View Cart" option has been moved to a discrete link at the top right with a nifty shopping cart icon, and the "Add to Cart" button has been replaced with a custom button that conforms more to the Edgeworks aesthetic. Just a few minor updates, but they'll help grease the wheels the next time we add items to the store.

Additionally, there are several items in the store that are listed as "Supplies Limited."
More site updates to announce! In our ongoing quest to improve and update the site, we have set up a custom-made Review Archive for Vox Populi. You can check it out for yourself to see everything on there, but here are the highlights: an automatically updating registry of reviews, individual review pages where the initial review and all response reviews are displayed together, share buttons on all review pages, integration throughout the News and Bios pages, and images for all products (movie posters, book covers, etc). It's a real step up for the VP section of the site, and we're really excited about it. Check it out!

Sharing is Caring

More site updates today, this time in the form of a brand-spanking-new Video tool that will make it infinitely easier for us to post new videos to the site. It also, incidentally, makes it easier to make formatting and content changes to the many existing video pages throughout the site, and we have taken the opportunity to add Share links to all videos pages for The Codex, The Heretic, and Vox Populi. These allow you a suite of sharing options, including links to Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, MySpace, Digg, StumpleUpon, and countless others. We have also gone ahead and added them to the VP Bios pages, for those people interested in self-promotion or in spreading the word about a particularly good writer, and to the front pages of each main site, for those interested in spreading the word about a production in general.

Most of our videos are pretty old news these days, but hopefully this will help spread the word about new videos when we begin releasing them. In the meantime, our site continues to become more and more efficient and advanced, and that day is growing closer and closer.

So hang in there! There are exciting days ahead for Edgeworks Entertainment!

Your Ad Here

Exciting news from Edgeworks HQ: we have just unveiled our new on-site advertising system! After experimenting with several ad companies, we have decided to design our own advertising service, and here's the cool part: we are opening it up to you! You can read all the details on our new Advertise page, but here's the basic idea: for just $10, you can buy yourself a spot in the Edgeworks ad rotation for a full month! This system is designed to allow young filmmakers, journalists, bloggers, or other content-creators who couldn't otherwise afford advertising to help spread the word about their products. It is meant to fit any budget, so anyone who wants to can take advantage of our system.

The proceeds from these ads will go directly toward hosting for the website, and then toward funding our next project. It's a great deal, so if you've got a machinima series, a blog, or a website, come spread the word!
